Book Ends

The BookEnds Readers Theatre - 2009-2010 Season Information

ABOUT THE BOOKENDS
The BookEnds, a readers theatre group of RSVP volunteers in the greater Elk River Area, is
dedicated to promoting the joy and value of reading in grades K-5 in local schools.
The BookEnds are volunteers — men and women retired from a variety of careers, all wanting to
share their enjoyment of reading. The BookEnds are not actors, but readers who offer another
way for students to enjoy the written word by coming into classrooms and reading teacher-selected
stories as a group. The BookEnds also bring another generation into the classroom.

ABOUT THE STORIES
Each season the BookEnds offer a list of stories available for reading at each grade level. Feel
free to browse the selections at other grade levels than the one you teach. If there is a selection
that fits well with what you are doing in your classroom, but it is not listed at your grade level, please
don’t hesitate to request it. Stories are presented by grade level simply to avoid too much duplication
for students, and to provide indication of age appropriateness of the story themes and content. The
BookEnds also make available a list of “Enrichment Selections” with stories to select from on
topical themes, including Diversity/Civil Rights, Poetry, People in History, and Dr. Seuss.
The times listed for each script include time for story introduction and conclusion. Some time should
be added for the total presentation to allow for movement of students/readers, changing rooms, etc.

ABOUT SCHEDULING
These classroom readings are presented free of charge and are available on Wednesdays or
Thursdays throughout the school year, or by special arrangement. Teachers may choose as many
stories per visit as class time allows. Although it is possible to read for an entire grade level in one
presentation, the best group size is two or three classrooms at a time. The BookEnds can then be
scheduled to read back-to-back on a given day, until an entire grade level has experienced the event.
The maximum total presentation time for one day is three hours. Additional days may be
scheduled, if needed.

The BookEnds has begun scheduling events for the 2009-2010 season. To schedule the BookEnds
